Is it just me or does the map on the main page have an incorrect area designated as "Oberlin College"?  Doesn't the campus extend North/South up to Union Street and down along Professor Street (i.e. one block over from and parallel to Main Street)?  The map shows the campus starting at the edge of Tappan Square and extending westward only. If the shaded area is supposed to represent Oberlin College, then it's wrong, unless it somehow only counts academic buildings and not residence halls, but even then, it excludes the sports complexes up on North campus . . . or am I completely wrong?

:No, you're right. That's very strange, actually: the maps come from [http://local.google.com Google Maps], and once upon a time, that's what their street map of Oberlin looked like. But I just now checked and they've got a [http://local.google.com/local?ll=41.294414,-82.221508&z=16 slightly-more-accurate map]. I have no idea why it's like this, and there's nothing any of us mortals can do to fix it, except write letters to Google asking them to get more accurate data of where the college is (they buy it from companies named NAVTEQ and TeleAtlas and whatnot). Hell, we could offer to draw it for them.

::Even the new map isn't technically correct . . . the college extends way past Tappan Square, whereas the new map shows it as only being between College Street and Union Street. Weird. You'd think someone would have more accurate data on well-known institutions. The updated map still completely excludes the Conservatory and the museums, auditoriums, and libraries on the other side of Main Street (assuming those still count as "on campus"). Oh well. Maybe we should write letters to Google.

:::Yes, write letters to Google! I already did. They'll give you a form response the first time, but the letter invites you to keep sending questions and they'll respond with a real live person if they can and if the info isn't available on their help pages already. The answer I got was "The Google Maps API is an application specifically designed for developers. As you discovered, there are subtle differences between this version and the desktop version of Google Local." ...which isn't very satisfying to me.
