Veganism
The traditional definition of veganism:
- "A vegan is a person who avoids the ingestion or use of animal products." (from Wikipedia)
Alternate definition:
- "One who omits all animal products from diet and lifestyle, including leather. Strictest forms omit honey ("non-honey vegan," NHV) and yeast."
For the most part vegans eat in co-ops, where it's often much easier to find vegan food than in CDS.
Contrary to what Oberlin's reputation would have you believe, Oberlin is not mostly vegan. Maybe something like 5%. For example, in the first semester of 2008-9, Harkness Co-op (the "hippie" co-op, and the second-largest dining co-op) had about fifteen vegans eating there. We've definitely got a lot more vegetarians.
Fairchild Co-op traditionally serves all vegan meals, with some non-vegan options (like grated cheese) on the side.
Harkness Co-op serves vegetarian meals with vegan options, though these meals will often be all-vegan for the sake of convenience. Veganism tends to dominate food policy discussions here and in the other vegan-inclined dining co-ops.
