This course will study the development of drama from the ancient Greeks to the present with the aim of promoting understanding and analysis of dramatic texts. By studying the major forms of drama -- tragedy, comedy, tragicomedy -- within their historical and cultural contexts, we will explore the elements common to all dramatic works, as well as the way in which those elements vary and evolve from one time and place to another. Nature of Text. Diversity. 1700-1900 OR Post-1900 (not both).
