- This seminar will examine German Expressionist art, with special attention to the artists associated with the early twentieth-century avant-garde groups “Die Brücke” (The Bridge) and “Der Blaue Reiter” (The Blue Rider). We will examine this art not only as a rebellion against academicism and bourgeois society, but also as an anxious response to Germany’s modernization. Working as much as possible with original objects, the seminar will pay special attention to such topics as: Expressionism and the primitive, Expressionism and the city, women and Expressionism, Expressionism and the crisis of masculinity, Expressionism and revolution, and Expressionism and national identity.
