Quiet Lab

The computer science lab in King 201, home to about a dozen computers named after famous people and machines. It also houses both the department's Beowulf cluster and the smaller cluster built by students in the 2005 Beowulf exco. the CS department. The lab was renovated in 2006, and now sports a professional, office-like look. Some introductory-level computer science classes meet here once a week to familiarize students with their tools.

King 201 is unofficially designated the "Quiet Lab," which means it is intended to be a quiet space for students to do computer science work. As such, making excessive amounts of noise and playing computer games are forbidden in this lab, and any student may enforce this policy. Those who wish to partake of such activities may do so downstairs in the Social Lab.

An oft-observed sociological phenomenon among CS majors is the annual migration of new majors from the Quiet Lab to the Social Lab, as underclassmen flee the quiet, familiar desolation of the Quiet Lab to discover the warmth and joy of a community of their peers. Because of this phenomenon, the Quiet Lab is typically inhabited by underclassmen and former majors, whereas the Social Lab is populated by upperclassmen and alumni.
