Obie Dollars
Obie dollars are a wonderful thing. Essentially, they turn your student ID card into a debit card. You can add money to your Obie dollar account by mailing or handing in a check at Conference Services in Stevenson-Biggs (under Stevie). You can use your Obie dollars to buy stuff at DeCafe and other CDS facilities, pay for copying/printing on campus and at various downton stores like Gibson's. It is a favorite way for parents give their children allowances because the money can only be spent on practical things bought in person, not random crap from eBay. And you can't buy alcohol or cigarettes with Obie dollars. It is a favorite way for students to store money due to its convenience, since you need your ID card to get into dorms you will (or are supposed to) have it with you at all times. If you are in a co-op you will not get flex points, so having Obie dollars is really nice.
Aside from at CDS, the following local merchants accept Obie dollars as a cash equivalent:
- Ade's Place
- Agave?
- Black River Cafe
- Dave's Army/Navy Store
- Ben Franklin
- The Oberlin Market
- Lorenzo's Pizzaria
- The Oberlin Bookstore
Many of these places refer to the fake currency as "OB $".
