A professor of Psychology, Karen Sutton is the Department Chair. A clinical psychologist with more applied interests at heart(Al Porterfield is the other clinical psychologist), she teach courses in the clinical area including Personaltiy: Theory and Research, Psychotherapy: Theory, Practice, and Research, Health Psychology, and participates in the Department's team-taught introductory course (The Study of Behavior). She also supervises the Department's Practicum in Community Psychology.
Her research interests are in the area of weight and body image. In the past, she has studied body image distortions and disordered eating among normal weight individuals. More recently, her interests have evolved to include body image distortions and weight control among the obese. She is currently involved in a long-term, minimal intervention treatment program for obese individuals with associated health problems (e.g., cardiovascular disease, diabetes type II) which allows her to combine her clinical and research interests as well as her interest in health psychology.
