[edit] How to receive a paycheck
To actually get paid for a job, a student will need to fill out their W-4 and I-9 forms, available at (and to be submitted to) the Student Employment Office (SEO). Since 2006, all international students have had this process set up during international orientation, but U.S. students need to bring one of the three following combinations of ID:
[edit] Forms of ID students will need
- A passport (current, NOT expired) OR
- An original or certified copy of their birth certificate AND photo ID OR
- An actual social security card AND photo ID
The SEO does not accept photocopies of these documents. They must be the real thing. Get them mailed from home if you need to.
[edit] How to fill out W-4 and I-9 forms
The SEO will cheerfully (or not so cheerfully, but usually cheerfully) explain how to fill these forms out. If you feel like filling out anything beforehand, make sure to use your home address (NOT your OCMR).
[edit] How to sign up for Direct Deposit
As of July 1, 2009, all campus jobs are to be paid with direct deposit ONLY, and not with an actual paycheck. Students will need either a voided check (not cancelled, just torn out of your checkbook with "VOID" written on it) or a deposit slip from their account to set up their direct deposit.
[edit] How to locate a job
Oberlin runs a classifieds system where student employment opportunities are posted. All campus employers are instructed to post openings on the classifieds website, though CDS doesn't always do so.
[edit] Federal Work-Study
Federal Work-Study (FWS) is a financial aid tool given to some students to help them pay for college.
Jobs being paid using a work-study award come from both the FWS award (75%) and the employer (25%) [1]. Many campus employers prefer to hire work-study students because they'll lose less money on them, though it's important to note that you don't necessarily need a work-study award to get a job!
A student awarded Work-Study is not required to take a job on campus, and a student working a work-study job is not required to use the money earned towards tuition.
[edit] Jobs in the area
Campus jobs are a popular option, but employment at downtown businesses is common too.
[edit] What to do once you finally have your timecard
It's pretty straightforward, if you don't work for CDS. You tally up your hours, and write them on the card. The card is then submitted to the controller's office by 10AM Monday following the end of your pay period (listed on your timecard).
