How to find a summer internship, research opportunity, or job

[edit] General Search

Before resorting to monster.com or looking through the classifieds, Obies should make use of some of the unique opportunities presented to Oberlin students. This can be especially handy when looking for Winter Term job opportunities.

Obie Opps is a job and internship search engine exclusively for Oberlin students.

Students are also welcome to consult with the Oberlin College Office of Career Services.

[edit] Science Internships and Research

  • See if any professors are hiring students for stuff during the summer.
  • Look into an REU (respected research internships run by the NSF).
  • Check out the national labs (research and industry laboratories run by the DOE).

[edit] Social Justice

The state PIRG (Public Interest Research Groups) hire students to canvas areas, and have opportunities for students to move up in their ladders or become full time upon graduation. They may also be interested in web programmers. Ohio PIRG makes regular appearances on campus, and always advertises summer student jobs. They can place with the PIRG from another state too, so regardless of where you want to work, you can apply and interview locally. Opinions on being a summer canvasser ranges from crummy and hateful to "eh, I'd do it again."

[edit] Campus Summer Jobs

Financial Aid, Admissions, and CDS need students to work during the summer. Working for CDS should be considered a last resort.
