This course explores the social, political and economic histories of different racial, ethnic, religious and cultural groups of women to develop an understanding of the varieties of womanhood in nineteenth century America. Topics addressed include: colonization, slavery, the differential impact of industrialization, the ideologies of woman's sphere, education, activism, and power.
