GRANDMA

GRANDMA as seen from Pleasant Street.
(This is about the living co-op; for the familial relation, see Grandmother.)

Oberlin College's smallest and oldest co-op was founded in 1935 as a safe space for dangerous people.

Sometimes abbreviated as simply GMA, this four person co-op provides an institutionally sanctioned safe haven for students with "alternative" mindsets and "dangerous" lifestyles (quotations taken from GRANDMA's charter).

GRANDMA's prominent bush is one of its most noticeable public pubic features, as well as its declarative signage, recontextualized from the legendary Charles Theater in Baltimore, MD.

GRANDMA is mutually exclusive with folk music.

[edit] History

Located at 62 North Pleasant Street (behind the Art Building), GRANDMA formerly housed Oberlin's first (and last) Rape Crisis Center (eventually replaced by NORD).

During the intense strain of student activism that pervaded the 1960's, GRANDMA served as the primary social nexus for the major revolutionary groups on campus. Most famous were the "Orgies for Peace" (OFP), which were stopped by campus authorities only after these orgies were determined to be the origin of a virulent STD no longer present in industrialized nations.

[edit] Dining

In contrast to most Oberlin College co-ops, GRANDMA's dining agenda can be summed up by its customary pre-dinner chant "MEAT MEAT MEAT FOR ME." This is repeated until the Great Grandma (GRANDMA's HLEC equivalent) enforces the "shut the fuck up" rule.

[edit] Membership

Because GRANDMA was founded as a safe space for danger, the identities of its members are not made public by OSCA or the college. There are currently no vacancies.
