Direct Connect

DIRECT CONNECT HAS BEEN BANISHED BY IT SINCE 2010. THIS PAGE IS USELESS. rip [Not by design - maybe collateral damage.]

Hub Status: Up at long last. Questions? Comments? oberlindchub@gmail.com

Kroy 03:13, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

Important Note: The address of the DC Hub has been changed from oberlindc.mine.nu:4111 to oberlindchub.mine.nu:4111. Please be sure to change the address in your Direct Connect Clients.

We were negligent in renewing the address and it got taken over. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Also, it looks like the new network authentication process (Fall '09) will not affect Direct Connect. (See http://oberlin.edu/cit/news/NWAuthUpdate.html ) You'll get some popup notifications, but they can be ignored.

Direct Connect is a file-sharing protocol that works well on local networks. This means that downloads go at the speed of the network connection, which can often be up to 8 MB per second.

Oberlin's Direct Connect hub is oberlindchub.mine.nu:4111. The hub used to block all connections from non-campus IPs, so that only users connected and authenticated through CIT could connect; it now appears that some or all external IP addresses are able to connect, so users should use caution when sharing data.

There are also a variety of off-campus hubs. You will get much much slower speeds with these hubs, however, and it is almost never worth the effort.

It is helpful to note that while the protocol is called Direct Connect, many students will use the name of one of the clients to refer to this P2P network. For example, a Mac-using student may talk about "going on ShakesPeer", while a Windows user may refer to "DC++".

Steps for Noobs

  1. Download direct connect client from the internet. If they try to make you pay for it you are at the wrong website.
  2. Open the program and try to figure out how one logs into it.
  3. The program will have a function to connect to a hub. Click this, and enter oberlin's hub address. This would be oberlindchub.mine.nu:4111
  4. If it asks for a username and password, you should choose a username and password for yourself. Don't give them your email address.
  5. The program will connect, and from there you will be able to access a list of other people to take shit from.
